From Lachen to the Checkpost – Acclimatizing for the Gurudongmar Lake Trek
Our group departed from Lachen at dawn, passing the final Indian Army checkpost where permits were verified. The road was smooth, but altitude symptoms struck fast—dizziness, dry mouth, and short breaths. These signs marked the beginning of our Gurudongmar Lake trek, and we hadn’t even started walking.

Meeting Locals and Crossing Ice – A Spiritual Encounter
As we started walking, we met a group of locals en route to a small Buddhist temple on the far side of the lake for puja. Though I didn’t fully understand Nepali, their presence was comforting. One elderly man calmly walked across the frozen lake, a shortcut that stunned us. The ice cracked faintly beneath him, but he made it. It was a moment that captured the blend of courage this place demands.

Yaks by the Dozen – Life Around Gurudongmar Lake
Near the temple, we were greeted by herds of yaks, some wild, others herded by a lone shepherd. Towering, hairy, and powerful, these beasts looked like mythical creatures—far larger than cows or buffaloes back in Mumbai. With the lake half-frozen beside me, and the sound of prayer bells in the air, I found a boulder and sat down, completely immersed in the beauty and madness of it all.

Surviving the Return – Mind Over Mountain
On the return leg of the Gurudongmar Lake trek, my body gave up before my mind did. My vision blurred, head pounding from altitude, and my steps grew unsteady. Still, I pushed on, climbing the final stairs toward the road. I slumped into the car seat, snow-covered peaks outside my window, overwhelmed with disbelief and pride. I had done it—I had walked around Gurudongmar Lake.

Post-Trek Stop – Chole Bature with the Indian Army
Before leaving, we stopped at the Army cafeteria near the checkpost and had chole bature while gazing at the snowy landscape. An Army jawan joined us, sharing that soldiers were training on a mountain above 21,000 feet nearby. It made our trek seem small—but no less meaningful
